Elementary Faith Formation

General Information

Our Elementary CCD program begins late September and conclude by the first week of May.
Classes for grades 1-5 start at 3:45p.m. and go until 5:00p.m. each Wednesday.  All five grade levels follow five overarching themes of God, Jesus, faith, church, Sacraments; each grade level has its own general theme.

  • Grade 1: Our Heavenly Father (Knowing the Triune God)
  • Grade 2: Jesus Our Life (Eucharist and Reconciliation)
  • Grade 3: Our Life with Jesus (Part of God’s family)
  • Grade 4: Jesus Our Guide (God’s plan in history and our purpose)
  • Grade 5: Credo: I Believe (Understanding the faith
 
Sacramental Preparation

Sacramental Preparation for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion begins in the first grade and these sacraments are ordinarily received in the second grade. Parents are asked to participate in helping to prepare their child for these sacraments by attending the required meetings and retreat day. It is especially important for all children preparing for the Sacraments to attend weekly Mass with their family. In order to give parents/guardians more information about First Holy Communion and First Reconciliation, we traditionally have a parent meeting in September. At the meeting you will receive:

  • Retreat Permission Form
  • Annual Calendar for Elementary Catechesis and date for First Holy Communion
  • Date for First Holy Communion Retreat
  • Copy of prayers children are to learn this year
 
Children's Masses

Join us for our monthly CCD Children's Mass the first Wednesday of the Month at the 3:45p.m. – Beginning in September all the way through April.

 

Children's Liturgy of the Word

The Children’s Liturgy of the Word Ministry is a wonderful program that allows the children of our parish to learn about and participate in the Mass in a way that is easy for them to understand. It takes place during the 8:30am Mass on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month. It is taught by our High School teens during the school year and one of our college students in the summer months, all under the supervision of Sr. High CCD teachers. After opening prayers, the priest calls the children forward, blesses them, then dismisses them. The children then head to the church basement for the Liturgy of the Word, and return during the offertory.

Announcements will be made in the bulletin about the upcoming Children’s Liturgy. All children at mass, from the ages 3 to 1st grade are encouraged to attend.

Totus Tuus

For one week during the summer we host Totus Tuus which provides Catholic children from grades 1st-12th a prayer-filled and fun-filled environment that will help them come closer to Christ through his Mother, Mary.

Totus Tuus, meaning 'Totally Yours' is a week-long Catholic summer program which demonstrates that one can be a faithful Catholic and still have fun. The program is dedicated to sharing the Gospel and promoting the Catholic faith for those entering first grade through seniors in high school.  Trained college students and seminarians visit our parish to lead the program. Morning “pump up” sessions, silly skits and songs, snacks, recess, water fights, and so much more infuse the element of fun into this program while the youth learn about God’s love for them and the beauty of our Catholic faith!

Make Totus Tuus a part of your summer plans. It is usually held in the early summer. Details for dates, times and registration information will be posted in the bulletin, website and made available several weeks before the time of the camp.

Junior & Senior High CCD Program (Grades 6-12)

Sacred Heart parish combined with St. Mary’s Parish, offers, through our CCD program, many opportunities to our middle and high schoolers who have an active faith life to integrate this faith into their daily lives. Through learning, discussion, prayer, sacraments, recreation, media and service, our young people are invited to encounter Jesus Christ in and through the teachings and sacramental life of the Catholic Church. 

General Information

Classes for the 6th-12th graders are from 7:30pm to 8:30pm each Wednesday night at Sacred Heart’s south building (old school building), from the 1st Wednesday in September till the last Wednesday of April, each year. A yearly calendar is made available to each family by paper, Facebook, email and on this website.
All classes participate in: VIRTUS classes; ‘Right For Life’ Living Rosary; Inspirational Speaker Talks; collecting for the Christmas Store & Food Pantry; Bible Trivia Night and youth rallies. 

2017 - 2018 classes

Prior to Confirmation

Grades 6th & 7th: Review the Bible by learning how to look up books, chapters, and versus in the Bible. Look up specific & seasonal stories in the Bible. Learn about the Catholic monthly devotions and holy days. 

Grades 8th & 9th: Preparations for Confirmation with weekly Bible scriptures, along with worksheets or puzzles to help memorization; review many topics that cover the annual events; and prepare for Living Stations of the Cross. 

Grades 10th & 11th: Learn about heaven/ hell /purgatory, with an annual trip to the cemetery around All Soul’s Day, to pray for the souls in purgatory. Abortion and other pro-life topics; Living Rosary, and Divine Mercy Chaplet. 

Grade 12th: Christian religions and different faith beliefs; spring break missionary trips offered through the colleges; discussion on the abuse of alcohol, drugs and occults; explore our own Catholic faith beliefs and the role that Saints and Angels play in our faith. Heaven & Hell, understanding the Mass and Sacraments – especially marriage. Importance of prayer, especially the Rosary. Reading and discussing about individuals who work for Social Justice; Explore the Bible and look for favorite verses.

2018 - 2019 Classes

Grades 6th - 7th - 8th Confirmation Preparation: students study prayers and the Outline of the Catholic Faith; while using Chosen Confirmation for the next two years. Next Confirmation will be held in 2020.

Grades 9th & 10th Reviewing Gospels, Ten Commandments, Corporal Works of Mercy, Spiritual Works of Mercy, Fruits of the Holy Spirit, Gifts of the Holy Spirit, and the Precepts of the Catholic Church. Present the Living Stations, told from the eyes of a teenager.

Grades 11th & 12th Review and or Learn about heaven/ hell /purgatory, with an annual trip to the cemetery around All Soul's Day, to pray for the souls in purgatory. Abortion and other pro-life topics; Living Rosary; Divine Mercy Chaplet; other Christian religions and different faith belies; abuse of alcohol, drugs and occults; Saints and Angles; understanding mass and sacraments; faith & what is available while at college and how to continue to stay involved in the church and grow in faith.

 

Confirmation

Confirmation is held once every 3 years ordinarily scheduled in the fall. It will be held at each of our parishes on a rotating basis.

It’s a two-year Program based on either ‘Decision Point’ or ‘Chosen’, or it could a combination of both; along with supplements to support the lessons. Candidates are required to complete 20 hours of community service outside their own home.

Attend Kelly Youth Rally, and a confirmation retreat, and will dive deeper into the 7 sacraments, while completing projects toward receiving confirmation.
Parents are asked to attend meetings in preparation and to be attentive in what their teen is doing or needs to do.

A collection of what the teen needs to learn & do, in and outside of class, is given out at the first parent & student meeting, and it’s a requirement.

Our next Confirmation will be in the fall 2020 at St. Mary's Parish, St. Benedict.
